The distance barely changes. The price does. Two identical journeys on the same afternoon can differ by AED 100 depending on whether the driver ran the meter or quoted a number at the kerb, and on where in Abu Dhabi you finish.

Abu Dhabi is spread out. The Corniche, the airport and Yas Island are not interchangeable endpoints, and on a 140 km trip an extra 20 or 30 km at the far end is real money. The table covers both directions, because most people asking about this route need to get back as well.

How the Dubai to Abu Dhabi Fare is Built
The reason a AED 200 quote and a AED 350 quote can both be reasonable on the same day is that the two are not calculated the same way. Work the metered version first. A Dubai RTA taxi charges a flag fall of AED 5.00 by day, AED 5.50 from 10pm to 6am, and roughly AED 2.19 per km. Over 140 km that is AED 306.60 of distance charge, so the meter lands near AED 311.60 before tolls, and AED 315.60 to AED 319.60 once one or two Salik gates at AED 4 each are added. Call it AED 310 to AED 320 for a clear run with no waiting time on the clock.
Now the quoted version. A driver offering AED 220 at the kerb is undercutting their own meter deliberately, because a confirmed 140 km fare beats a morning of short city hops with gaps between them. The catch is the return: a Dubai taxi may drop you anywhere in Abu Dhabi but cannot legally collect a passenger there, so it drives 140 km home empty. Some drivers price that in and quote high, some would rather take AED 250 than nothing. Both are common, which is why the honest band here is wide.

One consequence matters before you negotiate. The return direction is genuinely cheaper on the meter: 140 km at the Abu Dhabi rate of AED 1.82 per km is AED 254.80, about AED 260 with the flag fall, against roughly AED 310 the other way. Do not simply double the outbound number when pricing a round trip.
Dubai to Abu Dhabi Airport Taxi Fare
Abu Dhabi International sits east of the city, so a run from Dubai to AUH is 150 to 170 km rather than 140 km, and takes 100 to 130 minutes. Expect AED 250 to AED 380. Starting from Dubai Marina the road distance drops to around 145 km because you join the E11 further south, though the quoted fare rarely drops with it.
This direction is the expensive one, and the empty return leg is why. A Dubai-plated taxi that takes you to AUH has a 150 km drive back with no fare in the car, and the quote reflects it. It also explains the behaviour travellers find baffling at 4:30am: a driver declining a well-paid three-hour job, because accepting it removes them from the Dubai street market for the whole morning peak. How Far is Abu Dhabi from Dubai?
Approximately 140 km, city centre to city centre, on the E11 Sheikh Zayed Road. It is a single road for almost the entire distance, which is why the journey time is a fairly reliable 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes. The number moves once an airport is involved: Dubai city to AUH is 150 to 170 km, AUH back to central Dubai about 130 km, and AUH to Dubai Marina or JBR around 160 km.
The delays are not on the open motorway but on the approaches, on Sheikh Zayed Road through Dubai at either end of the working day and at the interchanges near the airports. Taxi or Pre-Booked Transfer: The Honest Split
A taxi is perfectly adequate for a good number of these trips. Travelling light, going one way, flexible on timing and happy to agree a number at the kerb, you get to Abu Dhabi for AED 200 to AED 250 and there is no reason to pay more. The case changes when the trip has a deadline or a second leg. A taxi cannot wait for you in Abu Dhabi at a sensible price, cannot be booked for 5am with any confidence, and cannot be relied on for the journey back, because the driver who brought you is not allowed to take a fare home.
