Abu Dhabi taxis, cream with a gold stripe, are free to travel to Dubai and run on the Abu Dhabi meter for the journey. In practice a good share of passengers on this route use Careem or Uber, or arrange a pre-booked car, mainly because the return leg cannot be handled by the same taxi.

How the Metered Fare is Built
Abu Dhabi taxis charge AED 1.82 per km, the same rate day and night, on a flag fall of AED 5.00 during the day and AED 5.50 between 10pm and 6am. Waiting time is AED 0.50 per minute. Run that over 122 km and the distance charge is AED 222.04, so a clear daytime run settles near AED 227 before tolls, and AED 231 to AED 235 once one or two Dubai Salik gates at AED 4 each are added.
That is the AED 230 at the bottom of the band, and it is not a coincidence. Everything between AED 230 and AED 310 is time rather than distance. Eighty minutes of driving with the meter ticking over on waiting time as well as kilometres is what produces the upper figure, and on this route the waiting happens in a predictable place: the last 20 km inside Dubai.

Where Dubai Marina Sits, and Why It Matters
Dubai Marina and JBR occupy the southwestern corner of Dubai, which is the Abu Dhabi end of the city. Driving north on the E11 you pass Jebel Ali, then the Marina towers, and only afterwards carry on inland and east towards Downtown, Business Bay and DIFC. That makes the Marina one of the first Dubai districts you reach rather than one of the last: about 122 km from Abu Dhabi against roughly 150 km to Downtown.
The fare does not fall in proportion, and that is the useful thing to understand about this route. Distance is the cheap part. The expensive part is the final approach, where Sheikh Zayed Road tightens through the interchanges around Jebel Ali and the Marina, and where a journey that has averaged motorway speed for 100 km slows to a crawl. A trip that ends at a Marina tower on a Thursday evening can spend a quarter of its total time in the last few kilometres.
Why the Metered Fare Varies So Much
On a journey of this length, a 20-minute difference in traffic adds AED 30 to AED 50 to a metered fare through waiting charges alone, before the slow-crawl distance charge alongside it. Entering Dubai from Abu Dhabi during the evening rush, particularly on Thursday and Friday evenings when the Marina and JBR are busy, adds 30 to 40 minutes on top of the base transit.
One more factor sits underneath the price and never appears on the meter. An Abu Dhabi taxi may drop you in Dubai but cannot pick up a passenger there, so it drives back empty. Drivers who quote a flat rate instead of running the meter are pricing that in, which is why a quoted number is often nearer AED 310 than AED 230 even on a quiet afternoon.
Abu Dhabi Airport to Dubai Marina
Arriving at Abu Dhabi International (AUH) and heading to the Marina adds the airport-to-city leg to the front of the journey: approximately 160 to 170 km in total, at AED 250 to AED 340. Taxis from the AUH rank are metered with an airport minimum of around AED 25, and the rank sits on the ground transport level immediately outside the Terminal A arrivals hall. Waits are usually short, except during the early-morning bank of long-haul arrivals.

Taxi or Pre-Booked Transfer: The Honest Split
Off-peak, arriving rather than departing, travelling light and with no fixed appointment at the far end, a metered Abu Dhabi taxi is a reasonable way to reach the Marina and will often come in near the bottom of the band. There is no case for paying more for that trip.
The argument for a fixed price is about the two things the meter cannot promise: a total you know in advance, and a car that is definitely coming. Evening arrivals into the Marina are exactly when the meter is least predictable, and the return towards Abu Dhabi cannot be handled by the taxi that brought you.
