AUH Airport Taxi and Cab Options
Abu Dhabi International Airport (IATA code AUH) gives arriving passengers three realistic ways to leave the terminal by road. Each suits a different kind of arrival, and the choice is easier to make before you clear customs than on the kerb with a loaded trolley.
- The official metered taxi rank - the standard AUH cab option. Vehicles are licensed by Abu Dhabi's Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility), the meter runs on distance and time, and an airport surcharge is added on top. No booking, no fixed price, and you join whatever queue exists when you walk out.
- E-hailing apps - the official Abu Dhabi Taxi app plus Careem, Uber, Bolt and Yango are all licensed to operate in the emirate. App pickups at AUH use a designated ride-hailing zone rather than the taxi rank, so you walk to a different point and wait for the car to arrive. Pricing moves with demand.
- A pre-booked private transfer - what Gulf Chauffeur provides. The price is agreed before you fly, the driver is assigned to your flight number, and the car is already at the airport when you land. Nothing to queue for and nothing to negotiate.
To be clear about what we are: Gulf Chauffeur is not a taxi company and does not operate at the AUH rank. We are a pre-booked private chauffeur service. If you simply want the cheapest ride into the city on a quiet afternoon, the metered rank taxi is usually the sensible answer and we would rather tell you that than pretend otherwise. Where a booked car earns its place is late-night landings, families with luggage, and anyone who does not want a queue after a long-haul flight.
AUH Airport Pickup: Arrivals
The AUH taxi rank sits on the ground transport level directly outside the Terminal A arrivals exit. It runs 24 hours and marshals move passengers into the next available vehicle, so the queue tends to move steadily even when it looks long. Two vehicle types work the rank: the standard silver saloons and larger vans that take more luggage, and both run on the same metered tariff.
The honest caveat on wait times is that they depend entirely on the arrivals bank. Land mid-afternoon and you may walk straight into a cab. Land inside the early-morning wave, when several wide-body flights clear immigration within the same half hour, and the rank can back up while you stand outside with your bags. Fares are metered, so a slow crawl out of the airport road adds to the total rather than being absorbed.
A pre-booked AUH airport pickup changes the shape of that arrival. Your driver monitors the inbound flight, so an early landing or a two-hour delay is handled without a phone call. Instead of walking outside to find a cab, you are met inside the arrivals hall with a name board, and the driver takes the luggage from there. The price was fixed when you booked, so traffic on the way into the city does not change it. 60 minutes of free waiting time runs from actual landing, which covers a slow passport queue or a delayed bag.
AUH Airport Drop Off: Departures
AUH airport drop off happens on the departures level of Terminal A, kerbside outside the check-in halls. Follow the Departures lane on the airport approach road rather than the Arrivals lane, which sits on a different level and will cost you a loop of the airport if you take it by mistake. The kerb is a set-down zone: drivers unload and move on rather than wait, so say your goodbyes before you pull in. If you need longer than a couple of minutes, park in the short-stay car park and walk in.
For a booked departure transfer, we work the timing backwards. Send us your flight time and where you are staying, and we set the pickup so you reach the terminal with room for check-in and security rather than at a sprint. From a Dubai hotel to AUH that usually means leaving considerably earlier than people expect, because the drive alone runs to around an hour and a half before any buffer. From Abu Dhabi city or Yas Island the run is short, but early-morning departure banks still put traffic on the airport road. Tell us the check-in cut-off your airline has given you and we plan to it.

Terminal A and the Zayed International Name
Two things confuse first-time arrivals at AUH. First, the airport is now officially Zayed International Airport - the name change was announced in late 2023 and took effect with the official Terminal A opening ceremony in February 2024, honouring Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The IATA code is unchanged at AUH, and plenty of booking systems, maps and signage still say Abu Dhabi International. Both names refer to the same airport.
Second, Terminal A. It opened in phases from 1 November 2023 and absorbed the traffic that used to be spread across the older terminals, so almost every passenger now arrives and departs from a single very large building. That matters for meeting people: "arrivals at Abu Dhabi airport" is a bigger area than it was a few years ago, and a name board in the wrong hall is a wasted twenty minutes. AUH Airport Transfer Service

The most common AUH booking is the transfer from Abu Dhabi Airport to Dubai. The journey takes roughly 80 to 95 minutes under normal traffic conditions, less during off-peak hours and early mornings. This is a point-to-point fixed-price transfer. There is no meter. The price is quoted when you book and does not change based on traffic or travel time. The same applies in reverse on the Dubai to Abu Dhabi route.
AUH to Abu Dhabi City
If your destination is Abu Dhabi itself - the Corniche, Al Maryah Island, Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, or anywhere else in the emirate - we handle that too.
