How UAE Taxi Fares Are Calculated
UAE taxis use a meter that combines two charges: a flag-fall (the starting amount when you enter the vehicle and the meter begins) and a per-km rate that accumulates as you travel. Most operators also charge a per-minute waiting rate when the vehicle is stationary in traffic - this is the element that makes peak-hour metered fares unpredictable.
On top of the metered fare, Dubai journeys may include Salik electronic toll charges of AED 4 per gate crossing, and airport pickups carry an additional surcharge. Intercity routes - Dubai to Abu Dhabi, Dubai to Sharjah, and other emirates - are generally handled as negotiated flat rates rather than metered journeys once the distance exceeds roughly 50 to 80 km.

How to Estimate Your Fare
To calculate an approximate metered fare for a UAE taxi journey:
- Find the distance of your route using Google Maps or Waze.
- Apply the flag-fall for your emirate.
- Multiply the distance by the per-km rate.
- Add any applicable Salik tolls (Dubai only).
- Add airport surcharge if applicable.
For example: a 20 km Dubai city journey during the day would be approximately AED 5 + (20 x 1.96) = AED 44.20, before tolls. This is a baseline - congestion adds significant waiting-time charges during peak hours.
Why Estimates Are Often Lower Than the Actual Fare
Metered taxis charge a per-minute rate when the vehicle is not moving. On congested routes - particularly Dubai to Sharjah or Dubai city during morning rush hour - a 30 to 60 minute delay in traffic can add AED 20 to AED 50 to a calculated estimate. The calculator gives you the best-case floor; actual peak-hour fares can be 30 to 50 percent higher.
For intercity routes over 80 km, the meter is often not used at all. Drivers negotiate flat rates - these vary between individual drivers and can be difficult to benchmark without prior experience on the route.
Fixed Price: No Calculator Needed
If you want to know the exact cost before you travel, a fixed-price private transfer removes the calculation entirely. Gulf Chauffeur gives you one price upfront - covering the full journey, door to door, regardless of traffic or time of day.
This is particularly useful for intercity journeys (Dubai to Abu Dhabi, Dubai to Sharjah, Sharjah to Abu Dhabi), airport transfers, and any trip where you need to know the cost in advance for expense purposes or budgeting.
