Dubai Taxi Colours Explained

All standard Dubai taxis share the same cream body colour - but the roof panel tells you which company operates the vehicle. This guide explains what each colour means, how to identify taxi operators across the UAE, and when a private chauffeur is the better option.

Gulf Chauffeur is a private chauffeur service and is not affiliated with any RTA-licensed taxi operator. This guide is provided as a public reference for passengers navigating Dubai's taxi system.

Dubai Taxi Colour Code: Roof Panels

Every standard taxi in Dubai has the same cream (off-white) body. What distinguishes one operator from another is the coloured panel on the roof of the vehicle. The RTA licenses multiple private companies to run Dubai's metered taxi fleet, and each company has a distinct roof colour.

Red
Dubai Taxi Corporation (DTC)
The largest operator in Dubai, government-owned. The default taxi most passengers use.
Yellow
Cars Taxi
One of the major private operators in Dubai, also operates in the northern emirates.
Blue
National Taxi
A licensed RTA operator covering Dubai and intercity routes.
Green
Arabia Taxi
Licensed private operator, part of the Dubai RTA franchise.
Orange
Metro Taxi
A smaller operator in the RTA-licensed fleet.

All five operators use the same RTA metered rates. The fare from A to B is the same regardless of which company's taxi you get into. The roof colour is purely for operator identification - it does not indicate price tier or service level.

The Lexus and Premium Taxi Colours

The RTA also operates a premium tier fleet known as Lexus taxis. These are typically dark-coloured Lexus ES sedans and are visually distinct from the cream standard fleet. Lexus taxis are metered vehicles and cannot be pre-booked in advance. You request them through the Dubai Taxi app and availability is limited.

UAE Taxi Colours by Emirate

  • Dubai: Cream body, coloured roof (red, yellow, blue, green, or orange)
  • Abu Dhabi: Cream body with a gold or copper horizontal stripe along the side (TransAD)
  • Sharjah: Cream body, SRTA-licensed fleet - similar cream livery to Dubai but operated separately
  • Ajman: Cream vehicles, Ajman Transport Authority licensed
  • Ras Al Khaimah: Cream taxis, RAK Roads and Transport Authority fleet

Why the Colour Matters for Lost Property

Knowing which company's taxi you used becomes critical if you leave something behind. Dubai RTA's main lost and found line (800-9090) handles DTC vehicles. For Cars Taxi, National Taxi, or Arabia Taxi, you will need to contact the individual company. The roof colour - or the taxi plate number if you noted it - helps identify which operator to call.

This is one practical reason some passengers prefer pre-booked private chauffeurs: with Gulf Chauffeur, you have the driver's contact details and they have yours. There is no anonymous lost property system to navigate.

Dubai Taxi Colours FAQ

What colour are Dubai taxis?

Standard Dubai taxis operated by Dubai Taxi Corporation (DTC) are cream (off-white) with a distinctive coloured stripe on the roof. The roof colour identifies the operating company: red for DTC, yellow for Cars Taxi, blue for National Taxi, and green for Arabia Taxi. The body of all standard RTA-licensed taxis in Dubai is the same cream colour.

What is the difference between the different Dubai taxi roof colours?

Dubai has multiple taxi operators all licensed by the RTA. Dubai Taxi Corporation uses a red roof panel. Cars Taxi uses yellow. National Taxi uses blue. Arabia Taxi uses green. Metro Taxi uses orange. All are metered, RTA-regulated taxis with the same standard cream body colour - the roof stripe is simply how you identify which company the vehicle belongs to.

What do the coloured roofs on Dubai taxis mean?

The coloured roof panel on a Dubai taxi indicates the operating company, not the service tier. All five companies (DTC, Cars Taxi, National Taxi, Arabia Taxi, Metro Taxi) operate under the same RTA metering standards. The company branding helps identify which app or phone number to call for lost property if you leave something in the vehicle.

Are Lexus taxis different from standard Dubai taxis?

Yes. Lexus taxis are the RTA premium fleet and are a distinct vehicle type from standard cream taxis. They are typically dark-coloured Lexus ES sedans with RTA markings. They are metered taxis, not private chauffeurs, and cannot be pre-booked - they are requested through the Dubai Taxi app.

What colour are Abu Dhabi taxis?

Abu Dhabi taxis are cream-coloured with a gold or copper stripe along the side - a different colour scheme from Dubai. They are operated by TransAD under the Abu Dhabi Department of Municipalities and Transport. The colouring is distinct enough that it is easy to tell an Abu Dhabi taxi from a Dubai taxi.

How are private chauffeurs different from taxi colours?

Private chauffeur services like Gulf Chauffeur do not operate as part of the RTA taxi system and do not use the cream and coloured-roof livery. Our vehicles - GMC Yukons and Mercedes-Benz Vitos - are standard private vehicles. You pre-book in advance, get a fixed price, and the driver is reserved for your journey.
