Why Many Expats Need a Driver When They First Arrive
New Dubai residents face a transport gap that does not exist in most other cities they may have come from. In London, Paris, or New York, extensive public transport makes car ownership optional. Dubai's Metro covers approximately 75 km of track across two lines - reaching major business districts (DIFC, Downtown, Dubai Mall, Dubai Internet City) but missing most residential areas entirely.
Areas like Arabian Ranches, Palm Jumeirah, Jumeirah villas, Mirdif, Al Barsha, JLT (partially), Dubai Hills, and virtually all of the fringe residential areas have no metro access. Bus services exist but take 40-90 minutes for journeys that a car completes in 15-20 minutes. For the first months while waiting for a UAE licence, or permanently for residents who prefer not to drive, a driver service is often the most practical transport solution.
The Dubizzle Problem
Search for "driver Dubai" on Dubizzle and you will find dozens of listings. Many are competitively priced. Many are from drivers who are clearly experienced and professional. And many are illegal.
The issue: most Dubizzle driver listings are from individuals who hold a residence visa sponsored by a different employer - a company, a domestic employer, or a previous job. UAE labour law prohibits employees from working for a different entity without explicit approval from their current sponsor. Driving commercially for someone else while on another employer's visa is a breach of these conditions.
The practical risk to you as a passenger:
- Their vehicle insurance is personal-only. Commercial passengers are typically excluded. In an accident, your claim may be invalid and medical costs your own liability.
- The driver can have their visa cancelled and be deported with no notice, leaving you without a driver mid-arrangement.
- There is no operator behind them - if there is a problem, there is no company to escalate to.
A licensed chauffeur company - holding an RTA Limousine Permit and a DED trade licence - operates legally, carries commercial passenger insurance, and has an accountable legal entity you can deal with if problems arise.
Understanding Salik: The Hidden Add-On
Salik is Dubai's electronic road toll system. Toll gates are located on the main arterial roads: Sheikh Zayed Road (multiple points), Al Garhoud Bridge, Al Mamzar, Al Maktoum Bridge, Business Bay Crossing, and others. New gates have been added over time - there are now approximately 8-10 active gates across the city.
Each Salik gate crossing costs AED 4-6. A driver commuting from Jumeirah to DIFC daily will cross multiple gates per direction - that is AED 16-24 in tolls per day, or AED 320-480 per working month. On a Dubai-Sharjah commute (one of the most common expat routes), Salik adds AED 20-32 per return journey.
Almost all driver services advertise their monthly fee without Salik. The monthly price you see is not the total you pay. Always ask specifically: "Are Salik toll charges included in the quoted rate?" and get the answer in writing before starting service.
Ramadan and Driver Logistics
Ramadan runs approximately 29-30 days, typically between February and March (shifting annually by approximately 11 days). During Ramadan:
- Fasting Muslim drivers cannot eat or drink in the vehicle during daylight hours. This is a practical consideration for all-day hire during Ramadan.
- Prayer times during Ramadan are more observed, and a retained driver may need prayer time accommodation.
- Service companies handle this operationally. If you employ a driver directly, it is your responsibility to manage these considerations.
- Road traffic patterns change significantly during Ramadan - rush hour shifts later, iftar (sunset meal) creates a brief 30-minute window of very heavy traffic near sunset, and late-night traffic (11pm-2am) increases as restaurants fill.
What to Expect on Your First Professional Chauffeur Booking

- The driver will have a name board at arrivals unless you specify otherwise.
- Payment is typically cash or bank transfer. Some operators accept card. Confirm before the journey.
- Gratuity is not included or expected but appreciated for good service.
