Fine
AED 20,000-25,000 (approximately USD 5,400-6,800). This is a fixed criminal fine, not a traffic penalty.
Imprisonment
Minimum 60 days in custody before your court appearance. You are held while awaiting trial, not after conviction. The 60 days is the minimum pre-trial detention.
Black points
24 black points applied to your UAE driving licence immediately. 24 points results in automatic licence suspension. The maximum before permanent revocation is typically 24 points - meaning a single drink driving offence takes your licence to the suspension threshold in one incident.
Vehicle impoundment
Your vehicle is impounded for 60 days from the date of the offence. Impoundment fees accumulate during this period.
Court appearance
A criminal case is filed. Conviction can result in deportation for expat residents and a UAE entry ban. Employment in the UAE often requires a clean criminal record - a conviction affects career prospects.
