The Rule That Makes a Dubai Itinerary Work
Dubai is a long, thin city. Old Dubai (Deira, Bur Dubai, the Creek) sits at the north end, Downtown and Business Bay in the middle, and the Marina, JBR and Palm Jumeirah 25-30 km further south along the E11 (Sheikh Zayed Road). Abu Dhabi is another 140 km beyond that. So the single most useful planning rule is this: group each day inside one zone, and only book a full-day driver on the days that cross zones or leave the city.
That means you should not pay for a car sitting outside your hotel on a beach day, and you should not attempt Old Dubai plus the Marina plus a desert safari with taxis and metro hops either. The itineraries below mark every day as full-day driver, half-day, or transfers only, with realistic drive times between stops. 3-Day Dubai Itinerary
Day 1: Downtown + Old Dubai (full-day driver, 8 hours)
This is the day that most needs a car, because it strings six stops across 20 km of city. Start at Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa around 9:30 am (drive from a Marina hotel: 25-35 minutes; from Downtown: 10 minutes). The driver waits in the Grand Drive pickup zone while you do At the Top and the aquarium, roughly 2-2.5 hours. Then 20-25 minutes north on Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood and the Dubai Museum area in Bur Dubai, where the driver drops you at the Al Seef end and repositions while you walk the lanes, cross the Creek by abra (AED 1 per person, 5 minutes on the water), and come out through the Spice Souk and Gold Souk in Deira. Pickup on the Deira side, 10 minutes to a late lunch, then back south for the 6:00 or 6:30 pm Dubai Fountain show. Total driving is only 60-90 minutes, but the car waiting at each stop is what makes six stops fit in one day.
Day 2: Palm Jumeirah, Marina and beach (transfers only)
Everything today sits inside one 8 km zone, so a full-day car would idle. Book a morning transfer to Palm Jumeirah (The Pointe or Atlantis end, 15-20 minutes from Marina hotels, 30-40 from Downtown, AED 100-180), spend the day between the boardwalk, a beach club and JBR, and take a second transfer back after dinner at Pier 7 or JBR. Two transfers, AED 200-300 total, done.
Day 3: Desert safari or Abu Dhabi (full-day or half-day driver)
Pick one. A private desert trip to the Al Marmoom or Lahbab area is 45-60 minutes each way on the E44 or E66 and runs roughly 3:00-9:00 pm, which fits a half-day booking and leaves the morning free for a mall or the beach. The Abu Dhabi day trip is the full-day option: 90 minutes to 2 hours each way, covered properly in the 5-day plan below. If your flight leaves late on day 3, a desert afternoon followed by a direct Dubai Airport transfer (25-40 minutes to DXB from most hotels, AED 200-280) is the cleanest ending.
5-Day Dubai Itinerary (adds Abu Dhabi + a mountain day)
Keep days 1-3 as above, with the desert safari on day 3, then add:
Day 4: Abu Dhabi day trip (full-day driver, 9-10 hours)
Leave by 8:30 am. The run down the E11 to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque takes 90 minutes to 2 hours depending on where you start and the morning traffic through Jebel Ali. Plan 60-90 minutes at the mosque (the driver waits in the visitor car park), then 20 minutes to Saadiyat Island for the Louvre Abu Dhabi, worth a full 2 hours. Lunch on Saadiyat or at Qasr Al Watan's cafe, an optional stop at Emirates Palace or Qasr Al Watan itself, and you are back in Dubai by 6:30-7:30 pm. This is not a day to improvise with taxis: the return leg alone would cost more than the difference between a taxi and a private car, and inter-emirate street taxis cannot legally pick you up for the ride home. Day 5: Hatta or Jebel Jais mountain day (full-day driver, 8-9 hours)
Two options, both genuinely dependent on a waiting car. Hatta is about 130 km southeast on the E44, roughly 90 minutes to 2 hours each way, for the dam kayaking, Hatta Heritage Village and the wadi pools. Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah is around 2 hours each way and takes you to the UAE's highest peak road, the viewing decks at 1,250 m, and the Jais Flight zipline (advance booking essential). 7-Day Dubai Itinerary (adds seasonal + culture + a free day)
Day 6: Global Village and Miracle Garden (half-day driver, seasonal)
Both are winter attractions, open roughly late October to April or May and closed in summer. Miracle Garden in Dubailand works best 9:00-11:30 am before the tour buses, then Global Village from 4:00 pm into the evening (the two sites are 15-20 minutes apart off the E311). An afternoon-to-evening half-day booking covers it. Visiting June to September? Swap this day for the Museum of the Future plus Mall of the Emirates and Ski Dubai, an easy transfers-only day.
Day 6 alternative: Sharjah heritage or Ras Al Khaimah
Sharjah's Heart of Sharjah district, the Museum of Islamic Civilization and the Blue Souk are only 30-45 minutes from Deira (longer at rush hour, when the E11 through Al Nahda crawls), and a half-day booking handles it. RAK pairs naturally with Jebel Jais if you did not do the mountain on day 5.
Day 7: free beach or mall day (no driver needed)
Being honest: you do not need us today. Walk to your hotel beach, take the Metro or a AED 20-40 street taxi to a mall, and rest before the flight. The only booking worth making is the airport transfer, timed to your terminal and traffic.

Practical Notes That Save Your Itinerary
Friday timing in Old Dubai. Friday midday prayers mean many souk shops in Deira and Bur Dubai close from roughly noon to 2:00 pm, and mosque visits pause. Schedule the Old Dubai day on any other day, or run it as a Friday afternoon-into-evening plan when the souks come back to life.
Burj Khalifa sunset slots sell out. The At the Top sunset time band (roughly 4:30-6:30 pm depending on season) sells out days ahead and costs more than daytime slots. Book online before you fly, then build day 1 around that fixed time.
Summer flips the day. From June to September, outdoor stops go before 11:00 am, afternoons go indoors, and evening plans start after sunset. Your driver keeps the car cold at every pickup point, which is the difference between a workable August day and a miserable one.
Traffic windows. The E11 southbound out of Deira is slow 7:30-9:30 am and northbound 5:00-7:30 pm. The Abu Dhabi and mountain days should leave by 8:30 am to stay ahead of it. Salik gates charge AED 4 each; on a private booking those are already in the price.
